Penny offers a Yoga Alliance registered RYT 200 hour Kusum Yoga Teacher Training certification program which will prepare trainees to share pranayama, meditation, yoga philosophy and both an active and passive form of asana. Teachers in training may choose to specialize in learning about either Ashtanga Yoga & Yin Yoga or Mindfulness Yoga & Yin Yoga.
Why do we promote both stronger forms of physical yoga and softer forms? Both are necessary for balance. No extremes on any front, we promote balance on all levels as a path to health and contentment. Both our bodies and psyches possess opposing aspects… strong/weak, constricted/spacious, up/down, male/female, yin/yang. It’s not eradication of the weak or constricted or down that will bring ease, it’s the acceptance and balancing of these dynamic aspects of ourselves.
The flowing moving vinyasa aspects of Ashtanga Yoga aids the health of muscles and bones. Like walking or running, the rhythm of the practice is soothing to the mind and body. Along with its strong physically therapeutic aspects, Ashtanga Yoga teaches us how to be in a meditative state while in motion and we learn how to move through our days differently. We learned how to teach Ashtanga through the long time strong and effective guidance of master teachers David Swensen, Richard Freeman, Shelley Washington and Beryl Bender Birch.
Yin Yoga & Mindfulness Yoga
The quieter forms of Yin Yoga and Mindfulness Yoga lead us inward and teach us how to be deeply still. Our experience teaching these styles has evolved from Sarah Powers, Paul Grilley and Yogi Amrit Desai. With its longer holds in relaxed positions, Yin Yoga physically targets joints and connective tissues that cannot be done with more active styles and its holds foster deep relaxation. Mindfulness Yoga employs Yin Yoga poses along with an introspective flow designed not only to lead us to stillness but to show us how to find and follow sensation within our bodies… the first step in finding and following our own intuition.
Practice is effort toward steadiness of mind. ~ Yoga Sutras
Both tracks are part of the overall Teacher Training Immersion: SHARE. It is required that participants take both the Kusum Life Immersion 1: QUIET and the Kusum Life Immersion 2: EXPAND. These two programs are required and are equivalent to the first 100 hours of the teacher training program. The Immersion program is meant to help deepen personal practice and sense of connection so each teacher trainee has firsthand experience to share with others. If this teaching is the path you know you are interested in, please contact us to talk with Penny about the possibilities. We would like training with us to be a good fit for you!
ALL THREE OF THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS ARE REQUIRED TO FOR THE RYT 200 HOUR TEACHER TRAINING:
Kusum Life Immersion 1
Quiet Your Mind, Body & Outer World
Learn methods to create more space and stillness in our minds, bodies, and interactions with the world outside of ourselves. We dive into the applicable wisdom found in science, psychology, modern and ancient writings, along with the holistic health practices found in Ayurveda to develop our approach to the practice of yoga poses and breath on the mat.
Why are the Personal Immersions required for Teacher Training?
The Immersions are an important component in the process of Penny’s teacher trainings for two reasons. First, by taking the Immersions and developing a sense of connection with authentic practices and methods, participants often develop an, unexpected, desire to proceed on the path of teaching others what have deeply affected their own lives. Second, the Immersions ensure that each teacher candidate has a rich and authentic background to share. We can’t teach what we haven’t experienced and lived first hand.
Kusum Life Immersion 2
Expand into Energy and Your Inner World
Over time we begin noticing the greater degree of quietness created in our lives by our understanding and our practices. We become more aware of and curious about what’s present in the greater quietness. Immersion 2 is about more predictably creating the feel of our own lives and understanding that this is just as skill based a process as shifting our bodies and minds. Learn the anatomy of our energy body and how to follow the movements of Prana/Chi/Spirit/Life as a sensory experience in both our bodies and lives through ancient methods as we develop our relationship with our own intuition. We will deepen our practice of the inward meditative forms of Yin Yoga and Mindfulness Yoga while building skill with Yoga Nidra guided meditation, seated meditation and breathwork (pranayama).
Kusum Teacher Training Immersion
